El Paso will Host Conference USA Tourney
Great news for El Paso today when it was announced that the city will host the 2010-2011 Conference USA basketball tournaments. Memphis fans think the sky is falling because they have to travel a million miles to El Paso, a town that apparently has nothing to offer for tourists or basketball fans. Man are they wrong.
El Paso has great food, great fans, and unique cultural events that will impress even the most jaded Memphis fan. I do admit that they probably will beat us hands down in the BBQ department but am willing to bet that the city will win them over once they give it a chance.
We all heard the same complaints when Oklahoma fans blasted the Sun Bowl for having the nerve to invite their team to the Sun City. By the end of the day however, I bet an order of Chico's that many of them were whistling a very different tune. I hope every person in El Paso that calls themselves a basketball fan turns up and buys tickets to the tourney to prove the skeptics wrong. We don't want the same fiasco that we faced after this years Texas vs The Nation game when only a few (although quite a nice crowd for a college bowl game with no big "stars") showed up in the Sun Bowl. Stevo, Jazz, Jess, and I will be in the stands for every game.
What a golden opportunity to have so much quality basketball played in our own backyard. I just hope El Paso will rush to buy tickets faster than they rushed to buy beer when the Diablos pitcher struck out the dollar beer batter the other night. Kudos to everyone who made the tourney happen in El Paso. Side note: Found an awesome sight that highlights UTEP athletics. This place is loaded with information and is updated constantly. Here's the link to Miner Rush.
